Unhappy times are an inevitable part of life. I am a firm believer that it is that tough times that make a person grow, more than times of ease. Thankfully, the one constant about life is change, and that nothing lasts. This is in no way a reason to diminish the sadness a person might be going through. Now with the current events in Palestine, we all feel heavy and drained, and need to find a means to manage our emotions.
Talbina is a porridge made with powdered barley and advised by our beloved prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, to consume in times of sadness or bereavement. It can be made with milk or water, and is traditionally drizzled with honey upon serving. I chopped up some dried dates and stirred it in as it cooked. Serving with pre-soaked nuts also increases the nutritional value. May Allah be with our brothers and sisters in Palestine and every Muslim in need of His victory and mercy.
Ingredients: serves 4
1/2 cup barley powder
2 cups water or milk
12 dried dates, optional
4 Tbsp honey, to serve
pre-soaked nuts, optional
Method:
Stir the powder barley and the milk or water in a pot to dissolve. Add the chopped dates, if using. Place over medium heat to bring to a simmer. Stir continuously until thickened to a porridge.
Serve hot, drizzled with honey and a scattering of presoaked nuts.
