Fruit salad is wonderfully versatile and a great way to consume fruits.
You can opt to use seasonal fruits, that way you will have a different fruit salad every time!
We often have misconceptions about fruit salads, and salads in general as well.
Some people think that they are the perfect health food. By all means, this is true... i you are careful what you add to them! Most pre-made fruit salads contain an obscene amount of sugar. Some are served with a dollop of clotted cream, or ice cream, or chocolate covered strawberries. Those additions make them not so great for the figure.
Hence making a fruit salad at home, like so many recipes made at home, ensures you quality of health as well as the cleanliness of the fruits.
I tend to avoid excessively acid fruits, but made an exception this time because the mango juice I chose to bathe them in really mellows out the tang.
Ingredients:
green apple, cubed
pineapple (ananas), cut
orange, segmented
peach, stoned, cut
plums, stoned, cut
grapes, halved and seeded
strawberries, hulled, quartered
blueberries
1 cup slivered almonds
1 litre mango juice
Method:
Place almonds in a bowl, cover in boiled water, cover with cling film and set aside for at least 20 minutes.
Mix all the cut fruit in a large bowl.
Drain the almonds and let cool for a bit.
Stir the cooled almonds with the fruits.
Pour the juice over the fruits, it should just come up to half-way.
Gently stir so as to not bruise the fruit.
Leave covered and refrigerated until just before serving.
