When in doubt, go for toast. Whenever I find myself in an inspiration rut, toast always comes through. Toast can be sweet or savory, simple or elaborate. This anchovy toast is a favorite in the Italian antipasti world, and don't knock it till you try it.
As will all minimal/simple recipes, you must go for the quality ingredients. Here, a good quality can of anchovies will transform the meal from repugnantly pungent to surprisingly delicate and delicious.
Ingredients:
Sourdough bread slice
butter
can of quality anchovies
Method:
Toast your bread, and cool slightly before buttering.
Drain the anchovies from the can oil and drape your buttered toast with the fillets.
Enjoy immediately.

Alternatively, the butter might be replaced by mashed cooked white beans, such as Italian gigantic beans. They also serve as a buttery backdrop to the sardines.
An excellent escalation to gourmet.
