Fried sicks of cheese are undeniably delicious, and just as undeniably bad for you. In a feeble attempt to make it a bit better nutrition-wise to consume, these fried cheese sticks come marble with cooked spinach throughout.
This tasty vegetarian appetizer is no lightweight in the calorie department, and you will find that one or two per person is sufficient.
Ingredients:
1 cup cream cheese
1 cup cooked spinach
2 cups grated mozzarella
1 tsp pepper
2 tsp salt
2 tsp powder garlic
Breading station:
1/2 cup flour
3 eggs
2 cups breadcrumbs
1 cup oil, for frying
Method:
In a bowl, stir together the cream cheese, spinach, shredded mozzarella, salt, pepper, and powdered garlic.
Line an 8 by 8 inch square dish with plastic wrap, then press the spinach-cheese mixture in and flatten the top.
Freeze the dish for about 30 minutes.
Turn the spinach-cheese square on a chopping board and peel away the plastic.
Cut the square in half, the each half into 8 to 10 rods.
Dunk each rod in the flour, the beaten eggs, then in the breadcrumbs, then once more in the eggs and breadcrumbs for a double coating.
Refrigerate before frying.
Fry the rods to a golden brown and serve while still hot.
