2072. Iraqi Haraq Isbao in Tomato Curry

Iraqi Haraq Isbao  can be vegetarian or full on carnivore, and is more known to be "poor family" food that's cheap yet fills the bellies and warms the soul. Last time I posted a tamarind version, today's is the tomato curry one, very similar in flavor to a chicken tashreeb. Remember to use stale dry Iraqi tannour bread. If only fresh is available, speed up the process by drying it out in a low temperature oven.

Ingredients:

3 dry stale Iraqi tannour bread
olive oil and butter
3 large onions
3 large tomatoes
1 tsp turmeric
2 tsp Madras curry powder
1 tsp black pepper
1 tsp dry lemon powder
salt
Water

Method:

In a bit of olive oil and butter, saute the onion and tomato then cover to steam until gone completely soft. Add the turmeric, curry, salt, pepper, and dry lemon powder, saute until fragrant then add 6 cups of water. Bring to a boil and reduce heat to simmer for 10-15 minutes.
Break the stale bread to bit-sized pieces and add to the simmering broth. Stir until the bread has soaked up the broth and gone completely soft. Add more water of necessary, and taste to adjust seasoning before serving.
