2028. Seared Mortadella Sandwich

Frequently in life and in all its various aspects, it does one good to go back to basics. This deli meat and cheese sandwich is based off a fundamental essence, and spruced up somewhat by simply searing the meat. This adds a new dimension of flavor to an otherwise basic sandwich.

Ingredients:

6 thin slices of high-quality mortadella
2–3 slices mozzarella cheese
1 soft bread roll
1 tbsp mayonnaise
1 tbsp Dijon mustard

Method:

Gently fold and clump the thinly sliced mortadella into 2 to 3 small piles (about 2 slices per pile) and fry over medium heat. Let them cook for a minute or two until the bottoms and edges are crispy and browned. Flip the piles and place a slice of cheese directly on top of the hot meat. Cover the pan briefly until the cheese is beautifully melted and oozing. Stack the melted cheesy piles on top of each other and remove them from the pan. Slice the bread roll in half and toast the cut sides down in the residual fat and oils left in the pan. Smear one side of the toasted bun with mayonnaise and the other with Dijon mustard. Place your tall stack of hot, cheesy mortadella in the middle, close the sandwich, cut it in half, and serve immediately.
